Choosing a Medical Aesthetics Provider:   It’s About the Credentials. . . And More!

About a month ago, I visited Coastal Aesthetics for a series of Botox injections and facial fillers.  My experience with Coastal Aesthetics was extremely positive, not only because of the results achieved, but also because of the way in which I was treated during the consultation, treatment, and follow-up process.  The staff – Dr. Lonnie Scarborough, Tina Haney Scarborough (RN), and the office personnel – all worked seamlessly to make what could have been a stressful situation for this first-time patient relatively painless and anxiety free.
After some reflection, I’ve come to realize how the selection of the right medical aesthetics provider can influence not only the quality of results, but also the quality of the entire treatment experience.   Having someone inject appearance-changing substances into your face is an intensely personal matter; therefore, selecting the right medical professional for your treatment is very important.  Not only is it critical that you have confidence in the professional’s background and training, you must also have trust in their ability to work collaboratively with you to achieve the results you want.
With those criteria in mind, following are a few suggestions – in addition to education and experience – to consider when selecting a treatment provider:
  • Individualized service:  Do you feel as if you are the sole focus of attention during your appointment and consultation?  Does the service feel rushed, or are you given all the time you need to feel comfortable and relaxed?
  • Responsive to feedback and input:  Are your opinions, thoughts and concerns about the procedure considered when designing a treatment regimen?  Does the medical staff work collaboratively with you to make sure your treatment is tailored to your specific aesthetic goals?
  • Outcomes:  Are you able to view samples of before and after photos of patients treated by the medical staff?  Do you have friends or acquaintances who have used their services and, if so, were they satisfied with the results?
  • Communication:  Does the medical staff let you know what is happening and what to expect during every step of the process?  Are they responsive to your questions, giving thoughtful, thorough answers and inviting follow-up discussion?
  • Customer focus:  Are you greeted cordially and by name when you enter the office?  Is the office staff considerate and responsive to your needs and requests?
  • Organization:  Is the office neat and relatively quiet?  Are the office staff professional in appearance and demeanor?  Are appointments scheduled and communicated efficiently without conflicts or confusion?  Is the staff accommodating in the event you need to cancel or change an appointment?
  • Follow-up:  Does the medical staff follow up with post-treatment contact (phone calls, texts, etc.) to ensure your recovery is progressing as planned?  Are they accessible in the event you have concerns that require additional follow-up visits and/or visual examination?

Every aesthetics patient deserves professional yet personalized attention to ensure a positive outcome and a positive experience.   So, when choosing your service provider, make sure you select someone who will provide unwavering focus on you and your personal aesthetic goals.  You’ll be glad you did!

Botox and Facial Fillers:   First-Person Account from a First-Time Patient

5/8/2019

For years, I have looked in the mirror and wanted to do something about the bags under my eyes.  That sagging skin made me look either constantly exhausted, older than my actual age, or – most likely – both.   As I grew older and age continued to take its toll, I found other imperfections to worry about:  lines around my mouth and eyes, creases on my forehead, hollow cheeks, even the beginning of jowls around my chin and jawline.  That last development was the last straw for me!

I have always been averse to any sort of elective treatment that has the potential for pain; as a result, I had resolved that the best course of action for me was to “age gracefully.”  However, I began to hear more and more about minimally invasive treatment options and the positive effects they could have.  I even witnessed first-hand the rejuvenating effect that Botox injections and facial fillers produced for some of my friends.  Finally, with encouragement from friends and family, I decided to give the process a try.

After an initial consultation, I chose Coastal Aesthetics as my treatment provider.  The Coastal Aesthetics team – Tina Scarborough, RN and Lonnie Scarborough, MD – worked together seamlessly to provide expert diagnosis and treatment recommendations.  They also provided extensive information about the treatment process, along with directions and pretreatment medications to minimize swelling and bruising from the procedure.  Based on this consultation, I decided to proceed with a regimen of Botox injections as well as facial fillers.

On the day of my procedure, I was anxiously anticipating a long series of painful needle sticks.   I was skeptical that the topical anesthetic applied to my face would be effective; however, to my surprise and relief, both procedures were relatively painless.  Tina carefully explained each step of the process and told me each time she was going to inject; her steady communication and calm demeanor served to keep me informed and relatively relaxed.  Dr. Scarborough, the Medical Director, was also on hand and provided input and direction throughout the process.  A comfortable bed, soft background music, and an aromatic diffuser all helped create an ambiance designed for maximum comfort and minimal distress.   Before I knew it, the procedure was over and I was on my way home.

Although not all results are immediate – it takes approximately 3 weeks for the total effect to be seen – I could tell a difference in my appearance from Day 1.   I had some swelling for 2-3 days, as well as a little bruising under my eyes and mouth; as that subsided, the effects on my wrinkles and sagging skin began to be more apparent.  Each passing day brings incremental improvement; I actually enjoy looking in the mirror each morning to see what’s changed!

As I write this account, I am half way to the 3-week posttreatment mark and could not be more pleased with the results.  The only question I’m asking myself at this point is, “Why did I wait so long?”  So for those of you who, like me, may be tempted but hesitant to try these cosmetic procedures, I have the following advice:  Don’t let preconceived notions and fears prevent you from doing something that can subtract years from your appearance and make you feel great each time you look in the mirror!
